Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill (SVPH) is on a mission to inspire generations through DISCOVERY by sharing the legacies of the Kentucky Shakers. SVPH is committed to bridging historic preservation, land conservation, engaged learning and warm hospitality to present an unrivaled destination experience.

Home to the third largest Shaker community in the United States from 1805 until 1910, SVPH manages the country's largest private collection of original 19th century buildings and is the largest National Historic Landmark in Kentucky. Onsite amenities at SVPH include overnight accommodations, dining and catering services, retail shops, event and meeting venues, riverboat rides, historical exhibitions and tours, farm and garden area, nature preserve, multi-use trail system, equestrian stable and an extensive calendar of special programs, activities and events.

The Marketing Department supports the mission of Shaker Village by sharing the stories of impact that make the Village special and inviting others to become part of that story themselves.              


Position Summary:


The Marketing and Design Specialist at SVPH creates visual concepts on a variety of platforms to support the organization's marketing plan and daily operations. Reporting to the VP of Public Programming and Organizational Strategy, the Marketing and Design Specialist works with SVPH's advertising agency to implement components of the overall marketing strategy. The Marketing and Design Specialist also ensures that SVPH staff have the support and tools necessary to consistently communicate according to brand standards.



  • Maintain a strong understanding of the organization's overall marketing strategy and implementation plan, ensuring that all design work aligns with and supports this strategy.
  • Partner with all departments to support the creation of requested print materials, digital content and other graphic resources in a timely manner, ensuring consistency with the SVPH story and brand.
  • Provide consistent review, updates, high quality design and functionality for digital media, including:
    1. Shaker Village website
    2. Interactive screens
    3. Mobile apps
    4. Email campaigns
    5. Blogs


  • Manage Shaker Village's social media platforms to connect the public to impactful stories and occurrences, including on:
    1. Facebook
    2. Instagram
    3. Twitter
    4. Pinterest
  • Partner with interpretive staff to provide graphic support for the development of exhibition materials, including interpretive panels, object labels and image layouts.
  • Partner with retail staff to provide graphic design as needed for merchandise and photography support for online sales.
  • Support onsite events through the development of necessary signage and other design features.
  • Assist the SVPH management team in providing a consistent, professional presentation for internal documents, presentations and policies by creating and sharing templates and providing training for staff members on usage as needed.
  • Shoot photos and videos to support all marketing and communications efforts, curating this media selection to provide efficient access to the management team.
  • Work with appropriate departments to ensure all written descriptions, brochure drafts and sales materials are proofread and approved prior to public distribution.
  • Secure competitive quotes, assist in vendor selection process and manage outside creative and print services as necessary.
  • Support guest and employee experiences at Shaker Village through the development of surveys and other forms of feedback as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management. 


Skills and Qualifications


  • Flexibility in the workplace, with comfort at the computer, behind the lens and in the field.
  • Creative thinker, with ability to see the big picture, make connections and be proactive.
  • Skilled in Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Adobe CS.
  • HTML experience preferred.
  • Skilled in managing email campaigns through web-based email software (Emma, Constant Contact, Vertical Response, or similar).
  • Capable photographer, with ability to shoot in variety of weather and lighting situations.
  • Capable videographer, with ability to edit videos for use.
  • Ability to operate a drone to obtain aerial video preferred.
  • Copywriter experience preferred.
  • Willingness to learn, study and become knowledgeable about all Shaker Village activities, amenities and guest experiences, as well as basic history of the site.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, which includes some evenings and weekends.



Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in marketing, business or related field required, Master's preferred.
  • Minimum three years of graphic design (or related field) experience.
  • Portfolio must include both digital and print work.


Mental and Physical Requirements:


  • Ability to maintain concentration with constant time pressures while meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain visual attention for considerable lengths of time.
  • Ability to sit and stand for considerable lengths of time at times in confined spaces and close proximity to other employees.
  • Ability to operate computers and general office equipment.


Working Environment and Conditions:


  • Regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions.
  • Frequently exposed to outside weather conditions.
  • Noise level is usually moderate.
  • This position will require working weekends, holidays and some evenings as needed.
