Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill (SVPH) is on a mission to inspire generations through DISCOVERY, by sharing the legacies of the Kentucky Shakers. Building Maintenance Department

The Building Maintenance Department supports the mission of Shaker Village by providing the thoughtful stewardship of the Village's buildings and the systems that support them so they may be enjoyed by guests today and passed on to future generations.

Position Summary

 The Carpenter (woodworker) is responsible for producing, repairing and restoring wood products to historical structures, windows, doors and furniture with a focus on preserving those items originally produced by the Shakers.


  • Ensures quality repairs and modifications of interior and exterior structures made of wood.
  • Designs, constructs and repairs cabinets, tables, shelves, benches, partitions, door and window frames and a variety of additional wooden accessories.
  • Utilize, clean and service all tools used for carpentry, including: drill presses, lathes, routers, sanders, saws, planers and wood-nailing machines.
  • Stains or coats products as required with lacquer, varnish or paint, selecting the appropriate finish choices in collaboration with the Paint Foreman.
  • Recognizes and selects appropriate lumber types and grades, with consideration for both historical connections and long-term sustainability.
  • Maintains and ensures that all carpentry work areas and equipment are in safe and reliable working order, and that all work is conducted according to appropriate safety guidelines and utilizing appropriate personal protection equipment.
  • Is familiar with SVPH crisis management/emergency procedures.
  • Updates job knowledge by remaining aware of new standards and regulations, specifically in the fields of historic preservation and woodworking and participating in educational opportunities.
  • Other duties as assigned by management

Education and Experience

  • At least two to five years of experience working as a carpenter or woodworker.
  • High School Diploma required.
  • Possesses knowledge of historical preservation and/or restoration processes of historic structures.
  • Experience preparing estimates for construction and/or carpentry work.
  • Experience visualizing, sketching and designing carpentry projects, as well as reading and interpreting blueprints.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record. Position may require use of a company vehicle while conducting certain Shaker Village business.

  • Sit, stand or walk for considerable length of time.
  • Ability to operate computers and general office equipment.
  • Perform physical activities such as bending, stooping, climbing and walking.
  • Specific vision ability required by this job includes close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to operate motor vehicles, lift/move equipment, materials, supplies and tools; wear protective clothing as required by work environment or government regulations.
  • Ability to understand specifications, blueprints, manuals and schematic drawings for installation, maintenance and repair of structures and equipment.

Working Environment and Conditions 

  • This position will require working outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • This position may require working some evenings and weekends.
  • This position will require working around machinery with a moderate noise level.
