Public Space Custodian Job Summary 

The Public Space Custodian cleans and maintains office, public, meeting and retail spaces according to Shaker Village standards and specifications while observing safe working practices. Rotating schedule working days, evenings, weekends and holidays. 

Responsibilities and Duties

  1. Cleans/sweeps/mops/dusts all designated areas, meeting spaces, retail spaces, office spaces, Public spaces and restrooms as assigned.
  2. Stocks all restrooms and meeting spaces according to their needs.
  3. Inspects all meeting spaces, public spaces, retail spaces as assigned.
  4. Maintains and organizes stocks supplies in housekeeping closets, cabinets and warehouse area.
  5. Launders curtains, rugs, fabrics etc. per schedule and as directed by the Housekeeping Manager.
  6. Checks for proper operation of items in designated areas such as TVs, lamps, windows, locks, drains, plumbing, telephones, etc. and reports issues to the Housekeeping Manager.
  7. Cleans and sweeps/mops/dusts hallways, stairs, baseboards and other common areas as assigned.
  8. Assists with laundry and warehouse duties and assists other housekeepers as requested.
  9. Checks and cleans all window sills for dust, cobwebs, debris and insects in designated areas on a daily basis.
  10. Sweeps and vacuums all hardwood floors and area rugs in designated areas. Will also clean hardwood floors as directed.
  11. Reports inventory shortages to Housekeeping Manager and Lodging Manager.
  12. Calls for trash pick-up and or empties trash at the end of the day into the exterior trash dumpster and recycling areas.
  13. Cleans outside and inside trash containers and recycling bins.
  14. Carries out deep cleaning activities as assigned.
  15. Cleans and stocks coffee machine. Cleans microwave/refrigerator, etc. in designated areas.
  16. Turns in all lost and found items, tags and stores as directed by Lodging Manager.
  17. Practices safe work habits and uses protective equipment where appropriate.
  18. Works with the Collections Manager and Director of Visitor Engagement to learn of and complete the cleaning and maintenance of historic artifacts and historic buildings.
  19. Performs other duties as assigned by management. 

Standards of Performance

  1. Reports to work on time, as scheduled. Well-groomed with name badge and appropriate attire or proper uniform as defined by Shaker Village policy.
  2. Practices good customer service behaviors i.e. listening, initiative, responsiveness, cheerfulness, accommodation, courtesy, honesty and professionalism.
  3. Demonstrates positive team spirit by providing assistance to other team members as necessary to achieve require standards of productivity and guest care.
  4. Makes decisions in the best interest of the property and in compliance with all applicable policies and procedures.
  5. Controls costs by properly using departmental supplies, water and electricity efficiently.
  6. Reports all guest complaints to direct supervisor immediately.
  7. Reports items/areas needing maintenance per Shaker Village policy.
  8. Reports any unlawful or suspicious activities to direct supervisor immediately.
  9. Attends and participates in staff, safety and training meetings and classes.
  10. Knows how to use equipment and is able to assist in the use of equipment for persons with disabilities. 

Physical and Mental Requirements

  1. This position requires the employee to stoop, bend, crouch, crawl, kneel, stand, walks long distances and stretch.
  2. Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
  3. Requires hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity.
  4. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  5. Requires the mobility to climb stairs and frequently lift and/or move objects weighing up to 50 lbs. 

Environment and Conditions

  1. Frequently exposed to chemical fumes or airborne particles.
  2. Occasional exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals.
  3. Occasional exposure to blood borne pathogens.
  4. Noise level is usually quiet.
  5. Inside/Outside work fluctuating temperatures.
  6. Working weekdays, evenings, weekends and holidays. (Regularly 12 noon - 8 p.m.) 

Education and Experience

  1. High school diploma preferred.
  2. Valid driver license with clean record
  3. Knowledge of general and/or industrial cleaning procedures
  4. Prior housekeeping experience a plus.
  5. Basic Math skills: addition, subtraction and multiplication. 


  1. Normal cleaning tools (i.e.: broom, mop, vacuum)
  2. Various cleaning products.
